Have you ever had one of those days when nothing seems to go right? I had one of those days last week and it stinks. The key to overcoming or just dealing with those bad days is?
The morning began as it always does, I made a pot of coffee and logged on to my computer. Except this morning, I spilled coffee grinds all over the counter. Really, 1/2 cup all over the place. After that mess was cleaned up, I headed over to the computer and jammed my toe on the edge of the refrigerator. Limping and trying hard not to scream and wake everyone in the house, I sat at the computer. Blank. No, not the computer, my mind. There was nothing to write about. This never happens. Then off to the bathroom. Who left an empty roll of toilet paper on the roll? As I was replacing the roll the darnedest thing happened, the new roll fell into the toilet. Come on! Obviously I had to fetch it and as I was carrying out that mission, I thought about crawling back into bed and asking for a do-over. Instead, I trudged along, carrying the weight of the bad morning until finally something made me laugh and forget the past.
None of these events on their own would tip the scales of anger, however cumulatively, they sunk my ship.
Things happen, and not always the way we want them to. Is there a secret to not letting them get to us? Yes and no.
People with a positive outlook are far more likely to laugh at themselves or put strokes of bad luck behind them. They have learned how to practice coping strategies. They have developed resiliency. They keep things in perspective and understand the bigger picture.
Basically, there are two ways to handle these situations, either let them bother you or not them them bother you. This is a choice you get to make.
