Kenneth Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles wrote the classic "Gung Ho". It is a business fable with an inspiring moral.
By using the characteristics associated with these three animals to serve as a model for a successful company, they have left an indelible mark in my head and heart of what is important and what an organization should strive to be.
The squirrel represents worthwhile work. Think about that industrious squirrel gathering nuts all summer long so it will have food for the winter. The squirrel understands the importance of what he must do. He also has to be WANT to do it.
The beaver represents doing the job well independently. He builds those beautiful dams without anyone telling him what to do or when. The beaver is driven by a clear message.
The goose doesn't fly alone. When flying in a "V" formation, the geese at the back of the "V" honk as if to say "Keep on flying, we're going great". We all need a little cheering and some words of encouragement.
Each of us has the responsibility of creating a work environment that incorporates these principles. Finding organizations with all three can be challenging however. So when it is lacking one of the animal's characteristics, be the goose, beaver or squirrel and create a culture you'll be proud to be a part of.
