So why is it so hard to implement a strategy for launching a product? Why do more than 80% of start-up businesses fail within the first year? Why is finding a job so difficult right now?
Could it be the common thread/link is that the target audience has not been defined?
Your needing a job doesn't equal an employer's need to hire. They are not in business to create jobs. Therefore, you will need to identify companies that need you for your talent and that seems are difficult as finding a needle in a haystack.
There is not a one-step solution to finding a job. Job search has required multiple, well implemented actions.
FIRST:
- ID companies
- Research the companies
- Identify their "pain" or needs
- Spin your talents to be a solution to their needs
SECOND:
- Network and make connections
- Develop an awareness of YOU
THIRD:
- Pitch your solution to those that buy (ie hire)
- Be prepared for rejection
Most frequently, leads for giving our pitch come from unexpected contact. It isn't the person we were speaking to but someone they talked to about us, that provides the opportunity for conversation.
The success of your self-marketing is hinged on all three steps being well thought out and expertly deployed.
Seth Godin blogged about realizing that we are not our target audience. When you are spinning your talents, what that means is taking what you are good at doing (successful too) and presenting it in writing so that others would see the value and want to buy it. Don't just dump history and expect people will see the connection to their own problems.
Personal Branding Blog blogged on educating those on the outskirts of your target audience on how to best use blogs and twitter. Perhaps those that most need your services, don't know it yet. By educating them, there may be the opportunity in the near future that they will see why they need you.
Keep planting seeds in fertile soil and remember to water them.
