Choosing target companies seems to be more difficult than it should be. This might partly be due to the fact that people don't know how to find listings of companies in their area.
The other factor is that people tend to gravitate towards what they know or are comfortable with.
I was reviewing a list of target companies on someone's marketing plan the other day and only saw Fortune 1000 companies. When I asked her why this was, she said she preferred larger companies. When I asked why, she said that's what was most comfortable for her. When I asked her what it was about the culture of a larger company that appealed to her, she was stumped.

What is it about your previous employers culture that you liked and disliked?
-
What did you like most about your manager and what do you like least?
-
Who was your greatest manager and what made them great?
-
How do you like to be recognized for the work you do?
-
How important is professional development to you in your work?
-
Besides a paycheck, what is most important in the work you do?
Sure these are difficult questions to ask yourself. Answering them will help you find fulfilling work and the right fit. Otherwise, you'll be shooting in a barrel, hoping that you'll find a fit or stumble upon it.
Is it possible that the cultural fit could be found in almost any size company? I believe the answer is yes. That is why it is so important to begin to investigate all sizes of companies. Small, medium and large.
The search process is also a learning opportunity. Learn about other cultures, industries, businesses that are available, beyond those that just post ads on job boards.
